I can swim, do I have to wear the life jacket?

Drowning is the #1 cause of death in Algonquin Park. It is also the most preventable. WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET! Canoeing is harder than it looks, especially if it's windy. Every year a canoe falls in the water. If your canoe falls into the water you will enter a state of shock. Even if you can swim, a life jacket will save your life. Don't pretend to be a hero, come back alive, wear a life jacket.

Can I have a beer in my canoe?

Alcohol, drugs, and other mind altering substances should not be in any boat. It's the law. Impaired boating accidents happen every year. Do not use our equipment while under the influence of something. Once a year, every summer, the police do a random check of all the boats on Galeairy Lake. They check for life jackets, the orange safety bucket, and they also check for signs of impairment and substance use. Don't take the risk, arrive alive, boat sober please.

What's in the orange safety bucket?

By law, all boats must have an orange safety bucket on board. Inside the bucket is: a whistle, a waterproof flashlight, and a buoyant rope. The bucket itself can be used to bail out water if your boat accumulates a lot of water. Bongopix staff check the orange safety buckets every year to ensure that all contents are included. Every Bongopix boat has an orange safety bucket attached to it. If you don't see it, please contact us and we will get you one.
